While in gothic rock band Bauhaus, guitarist Daniel Ash and drummer Kevin Haskins formed a side project with a radically different sound and called it Tones On Tail. When singer Peter Murphy left to form Dalis Car with Mick Karn in 1983, the side project evolved into a new band, Love and Rockets.

After new wave band Japan broke up in 1982, bassist Mick Karn was struggling to turn his attitude-rich playing style into a solo career. With singer Peter Murphy in the same boat post-Bauhaus, they joined forces as Dalis Car and released Waking Life in 1984.
