why am i suddenly seeing space whilst mining?

I cannot GET THE FUCKING ROD OF DISCORD. I was in the underground Hallow for about 5 hours with water candle and battle potion and yet I have not gotten a single rod.

Literally just as I was finishing my rod of discord farm...
