6/21 Rally to Support NASA Glenn and Fight the Budget Cuts
Hey all! I’m one of the organizers at Stand Up for Science Cleveland, and I just wanted to put some info in this subreddit about our upcoming protest.
The NASA FY26 budget supplement is right now targeting a 554-person layoff at NASA Glenn. This equates to a 40% reduction in staff. NASA Glenn does a lot of important work both in the Cleveland area and for the country as a whole. They do much of the safety testing that keeps commercial airplanes flying, they provide opportunities for local students to engage with the agency, and they generate over $2 billion in economic output in the state of Ohio with less than $1 billion of funding. The 2023 Economic Impact Report showed that NASA Glenn supports over 9,000 jobs throughout the state. The loss of 40% of their civil servants will have ripple effects that cause even more harm.
We have three main goals with this protest:
1. Our political goal is to call on our representatives to stand against these cuts. So far, none of Cleveland’s elected officials, either in the Senate or the House, have spoken up opposing the proposed cuts to NASA Glenn. We’ve invited them to speak at this event. We’ve given them a place to take a stand. If they continue to stay silent on this issue, we will call them on it.
2. Our personal goal is to show NASA Glenn that we in Cleveland and in Ohio support them. We know that this entire year has been incredibly traumatic and demoralizing for civil servants everywhere. The massive layoffs and enormous uncertainty take a toll. We have friends and loved ones who work at NASA Glenn, and we know that the news about potential cuts is hitting people hard. We hope that by staging this protest and showing out in force, we can bring a bit of hope to the people who've chosen to serve us as part of NASA Glenn.
3. Our scientific goal. Decades of science, knowledge, and American innovation will be irrevocably gutted if these cuts go through. Billions of taxpayer dollars, and years spent on missions like the Mars rovers, Juno satellites, OSIRS-APEX, and countless others, will go down the drain. Mars samples collected over the course of the past decades will never be returned for analysis. Missions that have already launched and are in space, returning data, will never be analyzed. Missions dedicated to studying the earth and its climate will be gutted. The impact that this wholesale butchering of NASA programs cannot be fully conceptualized- but it is the work of tens of thousands of people, hundreds of manhours, billions of taxpayer dollars that will pay the price.
NASA funding makes up only 0.3% of government spending. Any cuts here will not make an impact on your taxes. They will have an impact in your community, though. We’re calling on Cleveland to show up for the civil servants who show up for us. I hope to see you there.
If you feel comfortable, please RSVP at [this link](https://actionnetwork.org/events/stop-the-nasa-budget-cuts-protest?source=direct_link& so we can get an idea of headcount. You don’t need to use your real name, and you can use a burner email. We just want to be able to plan for our anticipated turnout. If you can’t attend, please spread the word. We want a big showing for the people of NASA Glenn.
Join us tomorrow in Ashtabula for the ones more east or looking for a smaller crowd!
Authoritarianism takes hold through submission.
You comply.
You keep quiet.
You survive.
America isn't following the script though. Yes there is fear, but we have volume, persistence, we are not going silent, and we are not disappearing.
They want us to believe we are outnumbered. They want us to believe that there is no choice. But the American people are choosing to show up and we are not done yet.
Hope is not coming naturally, this is by design, and if you are struggling to find it, please borrow some of mine. This is not over and we are the ones controlling this narrative.
It is more important now than ever that we come together in solidarity. Please join us TOMORROW, JUNE 14TH AT 1:30-4PM AT NORTH PARK ASHTABULA to protest.
There are multiple protests around the county the same day, and we encourage attendance at all for as much visibility as possible. Ashtabula is going to show up. We are not a "red county". We are a county of love and compassion for the entire world, especially our neighbors.
