Honest advice to new players.
Unsolicited and related to my personal experience and what helped me.
I got a bunch of great tips from Reddit + friends and YouTube but here are the best ones which have helped me during my first ever run through of a fromsoft game. Tried not to use the typical ones you see but rather my personal experience with the game as a newbie.
1-Explore and grind each area; despite not being a super linear story this is the best way to level up, learn the mechanics and find useful items. Don’t rush into the big boss fights. Test yourself trying to beat 75% of bosses in Limgrave. I beat Margit first try at level 30 so this method works. Rinse and repeat in Liurnia. Basically done speed run the game unless you are doing it for a video.
2-Crafting and cracked pots; pick up everything you see. Random flowers, pick it up, mushroom, yes please gimme 15. These will help massively as with crafting kit from merchant kale you can make sleeping pots and others which are so overpowered for certain boss fights.
3-step away. If you can’t beat a boss go away do something else and come back to it. This method worked massively for me. Level up a few times complete another mini-boss, explore a new area etc.
4-there is main questlines - highly suggest volcano manor contracts BEFORE killing rykard and searching for Ranni nice and early in the game to start hers. Entering the well on Rannis questline will be good for rune farming and the Nokron underworld has some important loot to level up your weapons.
5-try some different weapons. I got stuck using the bloodfang for ages and everything else felt shit. But certain swords, spears, claws have helped me take down enemies way easier. This will also help you understand mechanics.
6-watch tutorials - this may be a personal preference thing but I quite like following random quest routes from YouTube to find cool items. It’s helped me become accustomed to the exploratory nature of the game (level up arcane for better pick ups)
7-forget about the runes you lose - you will get them back. I saw a post the other day and someone said “lost runes are just part of what makes the journey greatâ€. I’ve lost 50k runes falling down a lift hole. It is what it is, make them back in 15 mins if you play it right.
8-duplicate your remembrances in the little walking churches with bells. Extra items or 40k runes if you eat them.
9-go give a dragon heart at the communion and buy dragon rotten breath, YouTube tutorial how to get dragon seal (good luck lol) and level it up.
10 - Main bosses -difficulty rating - level
I did then in this order
Margit - 3/10 - 30
Godrick - 6/10 - 35 - he’s alright but
Renalla - 6/10 - 44 ( be aggressive, don’t keep distance)
Radahn - 8/10 - 61 ( I had to come back to him, with dragon breath + used Blaidd summon)
Ancestral spirit - 2/10 - 70 - not really a tough fight at all
Draconic tree sentinal - 6/10 - horseback FTW
Morgott - 7/10 - 79 - summon + mimic tear - (2nd phase is horrible
Rykard - 7/10 - 85 - I came back to it with the leveled up serpent spear (the one you get at the fight) and you should walk phase one, just keep spamming on phase two and a nicely levelled mimic tear will help you out)
I’m now level 91, STR FAI build, 54 hours played.
Finally if you meet the Gargoyle twins in Nokron, good luck. Haven’t managed them yet!
