Review

Combat rotates through job-specific skill bars that reward timing and party coordination; healers juggle cast bars and positioning, while tanks manage enmity and cooldowns. Visual design blends painterly textures with crisp particle effects, and the orchestral score swells or drops to match each zone’s mood. The game suits players who enjoy long narrative arcs, methodical gearing, and weekly group content more than quick solo sessions.

Took a while to get anywhere in FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, because the early combat moves are so slow that I kept waiting for the next action to finish before I could press anything else. The pacing is patient, but when you’re already half-tired it just feels like you’re watching the bars tick down instead of doing anything.

One small cutscene right before a gate in Gridania caught me more than the boss fight that followed. The NPC just mentioned a local harvest festival in passing, but the line stuck. Felt like the first thing that made the place seem lived-in.

Still, twenty minutes later I was back to queuing up another duty and watching the same idle animations loop, so the nice moment didn’t really change the overall rhythm.
