What are Boeing looking for / researching with the Ecodemonstrator

What about it?

So today I excitedly spotted the Boeing 777-200ER ecodemonstrator and was wondering what the purpose of a 5hr flight over Europe is? Surely they can do all the tests etc in the US without the need to base this aircraft in the UK for a bit etc. I assume as this is a 20yr old airframe it has the new eco items on it rather than just flying a 20yr old airframe about. If anyone knows would be really interesting!

What about it?

I know jet engines are as easy as compressed air + mixture of jet fuel + combustion = thrust, but can someone give me some insight as to why there are so much piping around the engines and what it all does…
