How to clean brass drawer pulls?

What about it?

I’m painting my kitchen cabinets. I thought I might try to keep the drawer pulls and maybe spray paint them. How do i get them really clean? They’ve been in this house for 30 years I think.

Not a great picture, but we just bought a house and I opened the cabinet under the kitchen sink and got assaulted with cat pee smell. I believe the previous owners had older cats that would pee in places they shouldn’t (obviously). Any suggestions on how to get rid of the smell? I have some Nature’s Miracle enzymatic cleaner, but I want this smell completely gone, so I’m willing to use something more powerful to ensure it gets eliminated. These are stained wood cabinets though, so I have no idea what would be safe to use. Thoughts? Advice?
