[Image] For anyone starting a new endeavor

A recent guest on the Mel Robbins Podcast gave this perspective that made me pause. She shared that she felt like an outsider in the music industry because she had no hit songs on Spotify, no important connections, and no experience to draw from. Then she recognized that she wasn't an imposter, she was a beginner; and that she belonged just as much as anyone else trying to make it in life; that it was ok not to be as "perfect" because even the greats had to start at the margins. I wanted to share this in case any of you were starting a new endeavor - fitness, a business venture, a new job, whatever the challenge. In 2020, I lost my job and without family support, had nowhere to turn but myself. The pandemic was debilitating, especially here in NYC, and no one was hiring. All I could do was pick up some brushes and paint, both to process the turmoil and to hopefully make some money for bills - bills that were accumulating faster than my ability to pay them! I felt like an outsider, like an imposter, like an invader on the (art) scene who had no right to sell or make a living. I hadn't gone to art school and certainly had no connections. I was literally just trying to survive a global shutdown, but I kept painting and slowly, gradually, broke into this new world. The image you see in this post was one of my first substantial sales, one that happened despite anxiety, self-doubt, and the "imposter syndrome" that can limit anyone from getting motivated. If you are starting a new endeavor, habit, or pursuit in your life, I hope this fresh perspective allows you to recognize that you belong just as much as anyone; that you are not an imposter, you are a beginner - and with patience and practice, you will master your goal.
