Anna de Talleyrand-Périgord nee Anna Gould, Duchess of Talleyrand and Dino, Princess de Sagan - Circa 1908

Anna Gould, while not considered the most beautiful American heiress by the gossip rags of the time, was the daughter of financier Jay Gould, a prominent American railroad magnate and financial speculator from the Gilded Age. This lineage ensured she had no difficulty securing two titled husbands. She was one of the "American dollar princesses" — wealthy American women who wed European nobles from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Anna Gould married Paul Ernest Boniface de Castellane on March 14, 1895. He was the elder son and heir apparent of the Marquis of Castellane. Often referred to by his nickname "Boni" and using the courtesy title of Count of Castellane, he was jokingly called the first French noble to marry an American heiress in America. A true "man about town", his activities and appearances frequently made newspaper fashion pages. His distinct, Continental look was a frequent topic of conversation among New York's elite in-the-know. His extravagant lifestyle neither impressed Anna nor her father, a terse businessman even on his best days. She secured a civil divorce in 1906, after he had expended nearly $10 million gifted to her by her father upon their marriage. The couple had five children before their divorce. Two years later, Anna's romantic prospects improved. She wed Boni's affluent and charismatic cousin, Helie de Talleyrand Périgord, Prince de Sagan, who would later become Duc de Talleyrand. Their paths crossed at Château de Marais, one of Boni's old estates. After a visit, Boni noted with indignation, "Little did I dream that he would one day own Marais (which Anna had acquired in the divorce) and—incidentally—marry my wife." Anna and Talleyrand had two children together. In 1939, at the age of 64, Gould returned to the United States following the death of her second husband, the Duke of Talleyrand, and ahead of the impending Nazi invasion. This was taken sometime in the late 1930’s. I do not know the exact date. My aunt is in the middle. My uncle (and apple of my eye) is the little boy.

My great aunt is on the far right and her husband on the far left. I love my uncle’s little hat. Though they’re not visible, he was also dressed in knickers. My family had all their kids late in life. I was born in 1977, but my grandfather (my pictured aunt’s father) was born in the 1800’s, which I think is pretty cool. I never met any of my grandparents. They all died before I was born. I did know my great aunt shown on the far right; she lived to be 98. We were close.
