How to deal with missing pieces

A few days ago I was reading here complaints about how QC has gone down in the years and I was a bit skeptic until today, when I happened to get a couple pieces missing in the 76993 (Sonic) set that my father bought for my son for his birthday. The pieces aren’t actually necessary for the build, but the 7yo kid is rightfully disappointed - and so am I, since those little animals seems quite nice to have. For all of you that has had to deal with this, what’s the proper way? Thanks.

Fun and (at times) tedious build!

Had a fun time building this over 4 hours or so. At times a tedious build but looks great in the end!
