Advice on Cookbook Shelves

Looking to recreate something similar to this on the end of kitchen cabinets. How would you go about it? Do you think the back and shelves are solid wood? Veneered MDF? Plywood? What do you think would be the most affordable way to still make it functional, attractive, and able to hold the weight of a bunch of books?
