Gacha games

I don’t play many mobile games or “Gacha” games. So maybe someone can clear this up for me. I always thought “Gacha” had a negative connotation. I am American, we have this thing where we say “got ya!” After we play a prank on someone, or trick them etc. I thought these “Gacha” games were just that. Like they got you, they got your money, and you got nothing back. Like they tricked you. And now they are fully embracing the Gacha title. Anyone else confused by this?
