When my little angel was just six months old, a gypsy woman knocked on my door, cradling a tiny babe, maybe 3 or 4 months old, in her arms.
“Spare something for my child, anything you don’t need,” she pleaded, her eyes desperate.
“Alright, come on in,” I said with a shrug. “Let’s see what I’ve got.”
She froze, stunned, and shot me a wary look.
“You ain’t scared I’ll rob you blind or curse you with the evil eye?”
I smirked. “I’ve got nothing worth stealing, and a good heart doesn’t fear bad juju.”
I dug out some old baby rompers I didn’t need and wrapped her little one in freshly ironed swaddling clothes. The woman was damn near speechless, fumbling for words.
“How… how can I ever repay this kindness?” she stammered.
Then, she stepped over to my daughter’s crib, whispered some secret words for a couple of minutes, and turned to me with a mysterious glint in her eye.
