Courting Flute Sculpture in Indiana Park

Courting Flute Sculpture in Indiana Park

In Muncie, Indiana, a seven-foot-tall statue captures a moment of courtship. The sculpture, titled 'Night Song,' shows a young Native American man from the Southern Plains playing a flute to court the woman he loved. It was created by Western artist Joe Beeler and dedicated with the park on December 9, 1998. The base features a bas-relief of animals and the happy couple walking together, her arm around his shoulders. The flute is likely a traditional courting flute, often made from sumac, juniper, river cane, or sunflower stalks, used to play a special song that would invite the woman to join him.

Do you know of any other public art that tells a story of courtship?
