Trick 'r Treat director on designing Sam the Halloween mascot

Michael Dougherty, director of the horror film Trick 'r Treat, recently spoke at a Variety-moderated production masterclass in partnership with genre festival FilmQuest in Provo, Utah. He shared that some of his earliest memories are of Halloween, including carving pumpkins with his dad and going trick-or-treating. That early love, combined with his passion for horror movies and the occult, inspired him to create Sam, the film's signature Halloween mascot. Dougherty noted that he designed the character strictly for the passion and strictly for the art.
