The Outlast Trials

DFace review of The Outlast Trials. Filed under Action, Adventure, Indie. Editor rating 8/10.

Players enter Murkoff's controlled facilities and must locate key items, complete assigned tasks, and reach extraction points while avoiding detection by hostile entities. They perform these actions either solo or by coordinating with a small group to divide roles such as scouting ahead or creating distractions. Sessions end only after all objectives are met and the exit is reached.

Review

Core systems revolve around inventory management of limited tools like batteries and lockpicks, combined with hiding spots and noise-based threat awareness that forces slow, deliberate movement through each trial area. Visuals consist of grimy concrete rooms, flickering fluorescent lights, and bloodstained medical equipment rendered in a desaturated palette, while audio layers muffled footsteps, distant screams, and sudden impact sounds to signal nearby danger. The title appeals to players who prefer cooperative stealth horror sessions that reward planning and communication over combat or open exploration.

Tried The Outlast Trials after work and my focus was shot from the start. One small distraction I set up near the vents got ignored completely and the whole patrol turned on me without any warning.

Died right before the extraction door because the timing on a single noise cue was off and there was no recovery. That one felt cheap rather than hard.

The game keeps demanding perfect coordination on every run but punishes any slip like it's intentional. Not in the mood to grind that kind of frustration again tonight.
