Question about Omphalatus Illudens

What about it?

This season has been fantastic for Cantharellus Enelensis where I live…to a point where there have been a couple of poisonings resulting from misidentification. I suppose most poisoningcases are inexperienced foragers, but I wonder if experienced people can sometimes be fooled by Omphalatus Illudens. Which leads me to ask: Can Omphalatus Illudens’ flesh be white just like Cantharellus? Can Omphalatus Illudens grow alone or does it always grow in patches? Do the true gills detach from the cap like those on a Portobello? I’ve came accross young Chanterelles and it is hard to tell them apart from Jack-o-lanterns… Anybody has extea insight on this? I’ve read a couple of books and looked at many pictures but I’m still wondering…

Puffball monstrosity

What about it?

My daughter and I found this peculiar squishy mush mass on one of our nature walks yesterday. We found a number of run of the mill white puffballs in the same forest. This one seemed the same consistency as a puffball, but obviously very different in appearance, and not near the others. Any thoughts on what it might be? Southern Ontario, Canada.
