They do drink and smoke. There is military conflict with Mordor vs all the free peoples. And outrage from gollum and borromir because of the ring. Lol. I guess violence too. No guns, but foreworks and lots of melee weapons and bows and arrows.

Why didn't the Fellowship just ask Captain Ramius to take them from the Grey Havens to just off the Isle of Talfalas, put the One Ring inside one of Red October's nuclear missles, then fire it directly into Mount Doom?
