Spring Capture: Is this slightly oily film something to worry about?

I'm in the stage where I'm trying to wash out as much sediment as possible. The spring box sits on yellow clay, and I used that to naturally seal the gaps to limit chemical contamination. The pond stones I'm using had so much clay mashed into them, I hope that the film is part of that oily consistency that comes from clay-heavy water... but if someone sees something dangerous or concerning, please let me know!

My Silver Maple has a large scar on it. The limb is about 6in (~15cm) in diameter. Once winter sets in, is it safe for the tree to just remove the whole limb? Anything I need to do after removal?
