So like a lot of people, I buy a gun, never shoot it and sell it years later, still in the box. I will need an FFL if this rule passes.

Inherited firearm with scrubbed S/N

As the title states I just inherited a firearm with a scrubbed serial from a deceased relative. The gun is a pre-war 1911 possibly 1917/18 based on my limited knowledge. Is there anyway I can recover the S/N? I can only make out the letter N. Also has anyone else been in this situation? What are some issues I may face? It's a neat piece of history and I would like to try and find more info on it.
