A federal case?

In the 20th episode of the 5th season titled The Boy who knew too much we encounter this line from Kent brockman. 'ockman, just outside the county courtroom where an argument about chowder... has spilled over into the biggest trial in Springfield history. Behind these doors, a federal judge will ladle out steaming bowls... of rich, creamy justice' Now why do they have a federal judge preside over a county court case?
