Hawaii foliage?

How does an island so far out from any mainland get such an abundance of foliage? Especially since it formed from molten rock. Did the plants follow short distances between the long extinct former island that have weathered away into the ocean instead of traveling such a long distance from the mainland

How did South Carolina's "Grand Strand" form? A 60-mile arc of beach land with no barrier islands, despite such islands being present for hundreds of miles on either side?
