Kill on site or friend? (Northern California)

Recently moved into my first apartment and found this lil dude chillin on a tissue box. Lived in this area most of my life and never seen one before. He moves slow. ID help appreciated.

Found this bug in Denver Colorado- about 1 1/2 inches from head to tail

Have no clue what this is. Someone said it might be a tobacco worm but the images I’ve seen, those are all green.
