Grasshopper? Friend found in yard

She found this massive grasshopper(?) in her yard and i wanna know what it is. Found in Northern New Mexico near Colorado.

Big spider on my step

Are these some kind of aphid or adelgid? And are they a problem?

They’re absolutely coating the branches of most of the American beech trees in this forest. The ground beneath is also coated in dark purplish grey stuff, presumably their droppings

Please help in identifying this bug. Was still living and moving but didn't see a large mandible like I'd expect with a termite.
